Tribal. 2004. Óleo, acrílico y hoja de oro / lienzo. 150 x 100 cm. Colección: Juan Carlos Mata

The highly collected Dario Mijangos has shown his work throughout the world. His self-taught style of figuration portrays a shocking world of tribal myth and fantasy. Born in Mexico City, he takes inspiration from literature and the theater. He has published two catalogues and held a total of 12 solo shows between Mexico, Cuba, and Argentina. Dario Mijangos’ wide-ranging success is fueled by his unique vision into the psychological disposition of people and things. Whether people or an object, Mijangos renders his subjects with a powerful affect. There is a dark mystery that surrounds his work. Taking after the great social realist paintings of Diego Rivera, he shows figures in familiar yet stylized landscape. Throughout his work one sees apparitions creep through the landscape. There is an overriding theme of wanting and an almost religious fervor that permeates his images. Souls are laid free from clothing in a symbolic state of vulnerable desperation
